Algund – Alagundis along the traces of history…

The name Alagundis appeared in a document from 955 n. Chr. as Alagumna for the first time. Afterwards also the names Alagundis and Alaganda were found in the document. Presumably it has been derived from the Latin expression “ad lacunam”, meaning “an der Lacke” (at the paddle).

The romans named our region this way, because the river Etsch, which passes through Algund formed paddles. Therefore, the last house bordering Meran is still called Lackner-Haus (paddle-house).

Down to the present day Algund has evolved into a lively and charming village.
